Holden Rehab Earns 2017 Silver National Quality Award

HOLDEN, MA – Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center has been recognized as a 2017 Silver – Achievement in Quality Award recipient by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). The award is the second of three distinctions possible through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program, which was established in 1996 and spotlights providers across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality of care for residents and patients in long term and post-acute care centers and communities.

“We are honored to be recognized for what we’ve accomplished on our journey to improve quality care,” said Tara D’Andrea, Administrator of Holden Rehab. “Applying for the Silver award has helped us to achieve better outcomes as an organization.”

Based on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is also the foundation of the metric-based AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative, AHCA/NCAL’s National Quality Award Program challenges member providers to achieve performance excellence through three progressive levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold. At the Silver level, members develop and demonstrate effective approaches that help improve performance and health care outcomes.

“I am honored to recognize this year’s Silver award recipients for their dedication to delivering quality care,” said Alana Wolfe, Chair of the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers. “I applaud Holden Rehab’s ability to effectively apply the Baldrige criteria to improve quality performance.”

As a recipient of this year’s Silver award, Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center can now advance in developing approaches that meet the criteria required for the Gold – Excellence in Quality Award.

The awards will be presented to honorees during AHCA/NCAL’s 68th Annual Convention & Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 15-18, 2017. More information on the program can be found on the Quality Award website.

    Showered With Affection

    An excerpt from The Landmark

When Matt Balocca’s former classmates from Bryant College class of 1992 got together for homecoming, he had an idea: Why not do the ALS ice bucket challenge? For Balocca, a resident at Holden Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center, the challenge is personal: He has been diagnosed with ALS. His classmates gathered Sept. 13 at the center to be doused with water, straight from the Holden Fire Department hoses. Then Balocca had his own “dousing” with confetti, surrounded by well-wishers.

    Dietitian Decodes Food Labels

    By Sandy Meindersma
    An excerpt from TelegramTowns

HOLDEN — Food labeling has stressed the number of calories from fat in food for the past 20 years, but that has not helped Americans eat less, or weigh less.

Oriol Healthcare dietitian Sue Bartolini said that many people began to believe that fat-free and low-fat foods were diet freebies that they could eat without consequence.

“In the last 20 years, people got fatter because while they were eating less fat, (they were) consuming more calories,” she said. “We have forgotten to look at what the proper serving size is.”

Oriol breaks ground for expansion of Holden Nursing Home

    By Sandy Meindersma
    Excerpt from Telegram.com

Robert and David Oriol broke with family tradition Feb. 17, when they held the groundbreaking ceremony for the $16.6 million renovation and expansion project of Holden Nursing Home in February, rather than the company’s traditional November.

The project is expected to take 18 months. The facility will become home to all of Oriol Healthcare’s Holden patients; the 40 patients who currently reside in the Wachusett Extended Care facility will be moved down the hill.

The project is the first of several in the works for Oriol Healthcare, which is poised to have a complete continuing care complex on its grounds. Next up is a medical office building, whose permits have been approved, followed by an assisted living facility.
