Summer in Massachusetts can be glorious—yet the heat brings real health risks for older adults. These summer safety tips for seniors will help you enjoy every sunny day while staying healthy at home.
1. Drink Up—Even When You’re Not Thirsty
Older adults sense thirst less, so dehydration sneaks up fast. Aim for eight 8-oz glasses of water daily. Flavor it with lemon or berries for variety, and limit caffeine and alcohol.

2. Time Your Outdoor Fun
Try walks or gardening before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. During peak hours, rest in the shade or indoors. Set a phone reminder so you don’t lose track of time.
3. Dress Light, Dress Bright
Choose loose, breathable fabrics—cotton or linen work best. Add a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses for extra protection.
4. Keep Indoor Spaces Cool
If you have air-conditioning, use it. If not, close curtains at midday, run fans, and open windows when temps drop at night. Need help finding a local cooling center? Call our office—we’ll connect you to resources.
5. Know Heat-Illness Warning Signs
Watch for dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, or confusion. If any appear, move to a cool spot, sip water, and call 911 if symptoms persist.

6. Love Your Skin
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ 20 minutes before heading out, and reapply every two hours. Don’t forget ears, neck, and the tops of your feet.
