Flu Season Is Here: Stay Protected with Oriol Home Health

Tips from Oriol Home Health to Help You Stay Healthy This Season

Tips from Oriol Home Health to Help You Stay Healthy This Season

Flu season is here — and we want to help you stay healthy.

As temperatures drop, cases of influenza begin to rise. For older adults and individuals living with chronic conditions, the flu can be more than a seasonal inconvenience — it can be serious.

At Oriol Home Health, our nurses and therapists see firsthand how preventive habits and early education make a real difference. Here are our top flu prevention tips to help protect you and your loved ones this fall and winter.

    Get Vaccinated Early

The flu vaccine is your best defense against serious illness. It’s updated each year to protect against the most common strains and is safe for nearly everyone, including older adults and those with chronic conditions.

Tip: Schedule your flu shot early — ideally by the end of October. If you’ve missed that window, it’s still not too late. Protection continues as long as flu viruses circulate.
Our Oriol Home Health nurses can help you coordinate with your provider to ensure you’re up to date on vaccines, including flu and pneumonia shots.

    Practice Proper Hand Hygiene

We remind every patient and family that good handwashing habits are powerful protection.

Tip: Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds — especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching high-contact surfaces. When you’re out, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
During home visits, our nurses demonstrate proper handwashing techniques and help caregivers set up easy hygiene routines to reduce exposure.

    Keep Your Home Flu-Free

Clean, comfortable surroundings support recovery and prevention. Germs linger on surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and phones.

Tip: Use disinfectant wipes or sprays daily on frequently touched areas. Keep tissues and sanitizer in easy reach, and encourage visitors to postpone visits if they’re feeling under the weather.
Our team can offer personalized recommendations to help make your home safer for those with weaker immune systems.

Rest, Hydrate, and Listen to Your Body

When you’re caring for others, it’s easy to overlook your own health. Fatigue can weaken your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infection.

Tip: Get enough sleep, drink plenty of fluids, and don’t ignore early symptoms like fever or body aches. If you or your loved one feels unwell, contact your healthcare provider for guidance before resuming normal activities.
