Sun Safety Tips for Seniors and Caregivers This UV Safety Awareness Month

Sun Safety Tips for Seniors and Caregivers

July is UV Safety Awareness Month – A Vital Reminder to Protect the Ones You Love from the Summer Sun

As temperatures rise across Central Massachusetts, it’s the perfect time for caregivers and families to refresh their knowledge on sun safety and help seniors enjoy the season without added health risks.

July is National UV Safety Awareness Month, a time to remind ourselves of the importance of protecting our skin and eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. At Oriol Home Health, we are committed to supporting the well-being of the seniors we serve across Worcester, Holden, West Boylston, and surrounding Central MA communities. As part of Our family taking care of yours, we’re sharing simple and effective sun safety tips for seniors and the caregivers who support them.

Why UV Protection Matters for Older Adults

As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more vulnerable to damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Older adults are at greater risk for sunburn, skin cancer, and eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Many seniors also take medications that increase sensitivity to sunlight, making protection even more important during the summer months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and seniors are particularly susceptible due to cumulative sun exposure over the years.

“A little prevention goes a long way when it comes to sun safety,” says Nathan Oriol, MBA, NHA, Administrator of Oriol Home Health. “Our team encourages families to stay protected while enjoying time outdoors.”

Sun Safety Tips for Seniors and Caregivers

Whether your loved one enjoys gardening, a walk around the block, or sitting outside for fresh air, the following tips will help you enjoy summer safely:

1. Avoid Peak Sun Hours

Try to schedule outdoor activities before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. when UV rays are less intense. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can still reach the skin.

2. Use Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply it 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or after sweating. Don’t forget the ears, neck, and tops of feet.

3. Wear Protective Clothing

Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection are a must. Look for clothing labeled with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor).

4. Protect the Eyes

UV rays can damage the eyes and increase the risk of cataracts. Choose wraparound sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

5. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can happen quickly in the heat. Encourage water breaks often, especially for seniors taking diuretics or medications that increase sun sensitivity.

6. Create a Cool Retreat

If it’s too hot outdoors, bring the summer inside. Sit near a sunny window or on a shaded porch. Use fans or air conditioning to stay comfortable.

Caregiver Reminder: Check Medications

Some medications increase sensitivity to the sun, such as antibiotics, NSAIDs, and diuretics. Check with a pharmacist or provider if you’re unsure.
