Holden Days 2024 was an absolute blast! We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate with our community. This annual event, organized by the Wachusett Area Chamber of Commerce, was filled with fantastic food, engaging entertainment, and plenty of opportunities to connect with friends and neighbors. We were thrilled to be part of it all!

Our team, including members from Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing, Oakdale Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing, Oriol Home Health, Oriol Foundation, and Oriol Health Care Management, was out in full force. We had a fantastic time manning our booth, meeting new friends, and catching up with familiar faces.

The day was filled with so many highlights! We enjoyed grooving to the tunes of the Midnight Riders on the Main Stage in the morning, followed by the energetic beats of Decades by Dezyne in the afternoon. Over at the Bandstand, Screen Door kept the vibes going strong with their performance. The music added an extra layer of fun and energy to an already fantastic day.

Holden Days 2024 Kids CourtKids Court: A Hub of Joy, Laughter, and Excitement

The Kids Court was buzzing with energy, and we couldn’t be happier to see so many smiles! A huge shoutout to OnCue Entertainment for keeping the music lively throughout the day. The Reptile Shows of New England stole the show with their live animal “meet and greet” from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, where kids (and adults!) got up close and personal with some amazing creatures.

But the fun didn’t stop there! The Worcester County Model A Club had an impressive exhibit that took us all back in time, while the ninja obstacle course challenged kids to show off their agility. The Worcester Railers brought the excitement with their hockey shootout, and the dunk tank, crafts, and dance performances added even more joy to the day. Plus, who could resist a treat from the ice cream truck on such a beautiful day?

This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence in care and our dedication to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for our residents.

A Day of Celebration

To commemorate this incredible accomplishment, Oakdale hosted a day of celebration that brought together our staff, residents, and community. Achieving a Deficiency-Free Status is no small feat, and it would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our exceptional team. She has demonstrated time and again her passion for caring for our elderly population, and we are confident that she will bring the same level of dedication and positivity to her role as a Nursing Home Administrator in Training.

Tara D’Andrea, MBA, NHA, FACHCA, Director of Operations, expressed: “I have had the privilege of working closely with Lexy, and I have seen firsthand her commitment to our mission and her passion for elder care. Her journey from volunteer to Administrator in Training is a remarkable example of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication. I am excited to mentor Lexy through this next stage of her career.”

Olympic Spirit Shines at Holden Rehab & Skilled Nursing

August 12, 2024/in Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center, News/by Angelique Harvey
Olympic Spirit Shines at Holden Rehab & Skilled Nursing

Congratulations to our medal winners!

At Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing, our Resident Life Director, Ildi Kolonusz, and her amazing team have once again gone above and beyond, creating a memorable and joyful event for our residents. Over the past two weeks, our residents embraced the Olympic spirit with enthusiasm and vigor, participating in a variety of activities designed to challenge both body and mind.

The games were a wonderful way for our residents to engage in friendly competition while staying active and mentally sharp. Points were earned through various activities, including cognitive games, physical exercises, and even just showing up and participating. Luck also played a part, making the games exciting and unpredictable.

Our residents each drew a country to represent, and the competition was fierce but fun. In the end, the USA took home the gold, with Canada earning silver and Mexico proudly holding the bronze. The winners were honored with framed replicas of gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals, and their smiles showed just how much the recognition meant to them.

This event is just one example of how we strive to create a vibrant and fulfilling environment for our residents at Holden Rehab. Congratulations to all who participated and to our winners—you’ve made us all proud!

National Immunization Awareness Month: Protecting Health, One Vaccine at a Time

July 31, 2024/in Community, News, Oriol Foundation/by Angelique Harvey

National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a crucial time to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. Vaccines have played a pivotal role in preventing disease, reducing mortality rates, and contributing to overall public health. At Oriol Health Care and the Oriol Foundation, we are dedicated to promoting health and wellness within our community. This month, we want to emphasize the significance of immunizations and encourage everyone to stay up-to-date with their vaccines.

Why Immunizations Matter

Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to prevent serious illnesses. They work by stimulating the body’s immune system to recognize and fight pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Immunizations have led to the eradication of smallpox, a significant reduction in diseases like polio and measles, and the control of many other infectious diseases. By staying current with vaccinations, individuals not only protect themselves but also help prevent the spread of diseases to others, particularly those who are most vulnerable, such as infants, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems.

Vaccines for All Ages

Vaccination is a lifelong commitment. Here’s a brief overview of recommended vaccines for different age groups:

  • Infants and Children: Vaccines protect against diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and whooping cough. Following the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule ensures that children receive the protection they need as they grow.
  • Adolescents: As children enter their teenage years, they need booster shots for some vaccines and additional vaccines such as HPV, meningococcal, and yearly flu vaccines.
  • Adults: Immunizations are not just for children. Adults need vaccines too, including boosters for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap), as well as vaccines for shingles, pneumococcal disease, and yearly flu shots. Pregnant women should also receive certain vaccines to protect themselves and their babies.
  • Older Adults: As we age, our immune systems weaken, making us more susceptible to diseases. Vaccines for shingles, pneumococcal disease, and the yearly flu shot are especially important for older adults to maintain health and quality of life.

Immunization and Community Health

Immunization is a critical component of community health. High vaccination rates help achieve herd immunity, which occurs when a significant portion of a population becomes immune to a disease, thereby providing indirect protection to those who are not immune. This is especially vital for those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical conditions, allergies, or age.

Take Action: Stay Informed and Get Vaccinated

During National Immunization Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to:

  • Check Your Vaccine Status: Review your immunization records and make sure you and your family are up-to-date on all recommended vaccines.
  • Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Discuss any concerns or questions about vaccines with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your health history and lifestyle.
  • Spread the Word: Educate others about the importance of vaccines. Share reliable information from sources like the CDC to help combat misinformation and vaccine hesitancy.

Vaccines save lives and protect communities. By staying informed and up-to-date with immunizations, we can all contribute to a healthier, safer world. For more information on National Immunization Awareness Month and vaccination resources, visit the CDC’s NIAM page.

At Oriol Health Care and the Oriol Foundation, we are dedicated to your health and well-being. Let’s work together to protect ourselves and our loved ones through the power of vaccination.

Celebrate World Heart Day: A Commitment to Heart Health

July 28, 2024/in Community, Oriol Foundation/by Angelique Harvey
"Prioritize your heart health this World Heart Day in 2024."

“Take small steps for better health.”

Every year on September 29th, the world comes together to celebrate World Heart Day, a crucial initiative aimed at raising awareness about heart disease and its associated health issues. This global observance is dedicated to promoting preventative measures and lifestyle changes to avoid cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure. With over 17 million deaths annually attributed to heart-related illnesses, the importance of heart health cannot be overstated.

Understanding the Importance of Heart Health

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, affecting individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption significantly contribute to the risk of developing cardiovascular conditions. By understanding these risks and making conscious efforts to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, we can reduce the incidence of heart disease and improve overall well-being.

Heart Health Tips

To commemorate World Heart Day, here are some essential heart health tips to help you and your loved ones lead healthier lives:

  1. Maintain a Balanced Diet:
    • Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables: Aim for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. These are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that promote heart health.
    • Choose Whole Grains: Opt for whole-grain foods like brown rice, oats, and whole-wheat bread. Whole grains help lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health.
    • Limit Saturated and Trans Fats: Reduce the intake of saturated fats found in red meat and full-fat dairy products, and avoid trans fats often present in processed foods.
  2. Stay Physically Active:
    • Engage in Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. Activities like brisk walking, cycling, and swimming are excellent for heart health.
    • Incorporate Strength Training: Include muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week to improve overall fitness and heart function.
  3. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol Consumption:
    • Quit Smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. Seek support to quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
    • Drink Alcohol in Moderation: If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. For men, this means up to two drinks per day, and for women, up to one drink per day.
  4. Manage Stress:
    • Practice Relaxation Techniques: Engage in activities that reduce stress, such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. Managing stress positively impacts heart health.
  5. Regular Health Check-ups:
    • Monitor Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Levels: Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help detect and manage high blood pressure and cholesterol, both of which are significant risk factors for heart disease.
    • Control Diabetes: If you have diabetes, managing your blood sugar levels is crucial to prevent cardiovascular complications.
  6. Stay Informed and Educated:
    • Educate Yourself and Others: Stay informed about heart health and share knowledge with family and friends. Awareness and education play a vital role in preventing heart disease.

Conclusion

World Heart Day is an opportunity for all of us to take a proactive approach to our heart health. By making small but impactful changes in our daily routines, we can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and lead healthier, happier lives. Let’s honor this day by committing to heart-healthy habits and encouraging those around us to do the same.

Remember, a healthy heart is a happy heart. Celebrate World Heart Day by prioritizing your heart health and spreading awareness about the importance of cardiovascular well-being.

  • Tax Deductibility: Exhibitor fees are tax-deductible as proceeds benefit The Oriol Foundation (MA ID# 82-2485669).

Space is limited, and we aim to host a diverse range of exhibitors by limiting the number of vendors of the same type to no more than two. Tables and chairs will be provided, but we encourage you to bring your own tablecloth and décor to make your booth stand out.

To secure your spot, please complete the attached exhibitor registration form and remit your payment by August 23rd, 2024. Your prompt response is appreciated as it allows us to offer the opportunity to another vendor if necessary.
